Alpha-Core Power Cables for Pulsed Lasers

Alpha-Core flat power cables are used in pulsed laser applications where high power pulses and their power supplies must be physically separate and must be transmitted with extremely low impedance without distortion. High power pulsed lasers are designed for extremely low duty cycles, mostly well below 1%. Typical pulse lengths range from 100 to 200 nanoseconds with repetition rates in the KHz range. The short pulse currents may reach as high as 100 Amperes, requiring fast power transistors and carefully designed electric circuits.

Design:

The construction is based on the same principles and techniques as used in our Laminax shielding products. Our flat Pulse Cables feature two ribbon shaped conductors, enclosed in a micro thin, high grade polymer film, typically Polyester or Polyethylene Naphthalene. The film is bonded to the base metal in a proprietary process. The two conductors are laminated inside a common jacket of PVC or Polyolephine resin. 

Product Parameters

To limit voltage drop and signal loss along the cable for pulsed lasers, our interconnects offer:

·         Low resistance  

·         Extremely low inductance. This is the effect of the conductor width, their close mutual distance, parameters of which result in a high capacitance. The square root of the L/C (Inductance to Capacitance) ratio is termed Characteristic Impedance, a quality inherent in any cable, dependent on its geometry and materials but independent on its length. 

·         Characteristic Impedance values from 4 Ohm to 1.0 Ohm

·         Maintains rise and fall times within the nanosecond range required for high power bursts.

Available in standard models with characteristic impedance values of 4 Ohm, 2.5 Ohm, 1.7 Ohm and 1.0 Ohm.
